Robotics Classes in Scripps Ranch: Inside a Weekend Session

Oct 10
4 min read

Our robotics classes in Scripps Ranch are small, hands-on weekend sessions where kids ages 6–18 build and code real robots. Each group session lasts 1.5 hours, has no more than 10 kids, and every child works on their own project at their own pace with a coach close by. Your child's first session is free, so the easiest way to see what happens inside is to come and try one: just text (619) 786-5731.

Below is what a weekend session at Fusion Robotics Education looks like, who it's for, and how to get started.

How a weekend session is set up

Most robotics classes put every child on the same build at the same time. We don't. Each child works on a project that fits where they are, so a beginner snapping together a first motorized model and an experienced student writing code never have to move at the same speed.

Here's the basic shape of every session:

  • 1.5 hours, once a week, on the weekend. Long enough to build, test and fix something; short enough that younger kids stay focused.

  • No more than 10 kids per group. Coaches can actually see what each child is doing and step in at the right moment.

  • One child, one project. Kids don't wait for the fastest builder in the group or get dragged along by them.

  • Ages 6–18. Beginners and experienced students both have a place, because the project changes, not the format.

What kids actually do

Every session is mostly hands-on. Kids pick up their project where they left off, build or adjust their robot, write or change the code, and then test it. When something doesn't work (and in robotics, something usually doesn't work the first time), that's where the real learning happens. A coach helps them figure out why instead of handing them the fix.

What kids work on depends on their age and experience. Across our programs, students use tools like:

  • Block coding such as Scratch, a great first step for younger kids. Try our free Scratch course at home.

  • LEGO-based robots, including the new LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kit, which we use in class.

  • Robots like mBot2 and boards like micro:bit and Arduino, where older kids move into sensors, Python and real electronics.

Older or more experienced students can go deeper into text-based coding, sensors, control logic and design. Younger students focus on building, simple sequences and the joy of making something move.

How coaches place your child

You don't need to guess which level your child belongs in. After the free trial session, our coaches place your child based on what they saw: how comfortable they are building, whether they've coded before, and what kept them interested. That way your child starts on a project that's challenging but not frustrating.

If you're still wondering whether your child is ready, our guide on what age kids should start robotics walks through what to expect at each stage.

Why small groups and self-paced projects matter

Kids learn robotics at very different speeds. Some race through building and get stuck on code; others love programming but need help with mechanical design. A self-paced project lets each child spend time where they need it.

Small groups help in a few practical ways:

  • Coaches have time to ask questions and guide, not just keep order.

  • Quieter kids get noticed and get help without having to compete for attention.

  • Kids see what others are building, which sparks new ideas, without pressure to keep up.

If you're comparing options around San Diego, our guide to choosing the right robotics program lists the questions worth asking any program, including ours.

What parents should bring and expect

Your child doesn't need any experience before the free trial. When you text us to book, we'll share the session time, the location and anything your child should bring.

After a few sessions, many parents ask what to use at home. Our coaches' robotics kit guide covers kits by age, so you can keep the momentum going between weekends if you'd like to.

Can't make it to Scripps Ranch?

Not everyone lives near Scripps Ranch, and weekends don't work for every family. We also teach online:

  • Free self-paced courses in our course catalog, including Scratch.

  • All-Access for $39/month with a 7-day free trial, which unlocks the full catalog, from LEGO SPIKE Essential to mBot2 and Arduino. See pricing plans.

  • Remote 1-on-1 live lessons for $149/month with a coach. Text (619) 786-5731 to set them up.

Common questions

Does my child need any robotics experience? No. Plenty of kids start with zero experience. Coaches place each child after the free trial so the first project fits their level.

What ages do you teach? Our weekend group sessions are for ages 6–18. Because every child has their own project, the work matches your child's level instead of a fixed class plan.

How do I book the free first session? Text (619) 786-5731 and we'll help you find a weekend time. You can read more on our programs page.
